Nature Notes

Birds have fatter crops now the snow has gone!

The birds are spoilt for choice when feeding now, as the current cold-spell comes to a temporary end and the ground softens with the continuing thaw and a total disappearance of lying snow With my garden well supplied with clean drinking and unfrozen water in the bird-bath, and the remains of seeds on the ground and a well stocked birdfeeder, I have a healthy set of chaffinches, greenfinches, blue and great tits, goldfinches, at least one robin, wood-pigeons, collared doves, and of course blackbirds, starlings and an occasional dunnock or two flapping their wings in the way that dunnocks do.
